4 Year Old w/ SM – 3+ Hour Meltdowns Daily

  • 4-year-old with recently diagnosed SM. Does talk in many situations, but I’m becoming more concerned about the actual anxiety and avoidance. Any transition (e.g., going downstairs to breakfast) or attempt to do an activity (e.g., trying to go to a class he has asked to do and talks about excitedly at times) triggers massive meltdowns. We do not know how to help during meltdown mode. I’ve read many books and tried many strategies. My child screams that he is “too angry to eat” and to “please help him calm down.” I am at a total loss, and our family is in crisis. Please help with any advice on getting through or avoiding the meltdowns.

  • Here is an example of what I’m doing in a very similar situation with family in treatment with me: Parents video child’s temper tantrum and play back to child. Parents process emotionally with child on 4 year old level. Parents teach breathing-calming technique. Due to over the top OCD medication micro-dosing is initiated.
